Odum’s Transcription & Translation Service
My responsibilities when I first started at the Odum Institute were largely focused on video production, and as a result I spent much of my time working on transcriptions. In talking with colleagues, it became evident that there was a significant need for transcription services for qualitative research. I decided to create UNC’s first on-site audio transcription service in 2017. Over the next two years, I steadily grew and developed the department, hiring our first additional, dedicated transcriptionist in February 2020. Since October 2020, the Odum transcription service has grown to a staff of three part-time employees, earned more than $30,000 in revenue for the Institute and added Mandarin-English translation.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Research Certificate Program
In an effort to facilitate a more diverse, equitable and inclusive research enterprise at UNC-Chapel Hill, two of my colleagues and I wrote a proposal for the DEIR Certificate Program, which was approved in Fall 2020. Since January 2021, I have been working with the DEIR program manager and our faculty advisor to support the pilot program. This has included:
Developing curriculum
Identifying instructors
Recruiting participants
Tracking participation
Facilitating and analyzing focus groups for evaluative purposes
Designing, disseminating and analyzing post-course evaluations
Managing communications and messaging to participants
And more!
Data Night Podcast
I started the Data Night with the Odum Institute Podcast as a way to push back against the narrow view of social science that we have often come up against in our promotional efforts. In each episode, I chat with a researcher we have worked with—including students, faculty and staff—about projects they are passionate about. This has allowed me to highlight how many different disciplines use social science and why it is such an important field. I have produced every episode, including recruiting guests, hosting, editing and publishing.
